The Wonder Girls are back with a new track ‘Like This’. After their shot to fame with ‘Nobody’ the girls haven’t been on my radar since then, even though they are said to be one of the most popular girl groups. I won’t say they were totally unsuccessful in America, but i always thought it was too early for them to try to break into the American music industry when it was difficult even for American musicians. Though they did manage to get into one of America’s music chart, it was only of a decent rank. Instead, i would have rather they established their position (and music) in Korea first. With the Hallyu Wave at it’s peak now, well established groups in Korea like Big Bang and SNSD have automatically became just as (or more) famous as Wonder Girls in America, considering that Wonder Girls were actually promoting in the USA far longer. And while all 3 groups are mentioned in some American news, Wonder Girls are definitely at the losing end in Korea as compared to SNSD and Big Bang. Hopefully with this album, they will once again well-establish their presence in Korea.
Their new song ‘Like This’ is probably one of the more refreshing song we have heard from girl groups this year so far. Finally, a song without disco or dubstep. The music can be described in one word – Fun. (and of course -electronic sounds and a hip hop beat) The song works very well as a song to welcome the summer as the girls bask in the sunshine in colourful styles. The MV is as fun as the song, working with the concept of a flash mob. The girls start dancing out of nowhere as the music starts, calling attention to everyone present at the square. As the people around them start to dance along, it really becomes a (Wonder) party, and everyone’s invited. This concept of a flash mob allows the girls to interact and dance with other people, and not stick to the choreography so closely but just let loose and enjoy themselves. The MV had great colours, though it was a pity about the over exposure, though it did achieve a certain effect. Almost Lomo style. Just like the feel of the song, the lyrics tell us to let go of any stress and just have fun. The rap part was done pretty well and i really enjoyed it because it was really formed a part of the song. Hooray for the girls, they just scored another one in the kpop music scene with this song.
I’m so glad the girls are stepping out from their retro concept since ‘Nobody’ shot to fame. We finally see the girls acting like their age instead of looking a tad too old for their age. The concept they are using finally makes use of their youth. As much as i still think that they going to the states in their 2nd year after debut was too early, with the good response of this song, i just might have to take my words back. Well, we’ll just have to wait and see what happens when their promotion starts on the 8th.
